HOW SCORING WORKS

VersusAnime uses an ELO-based rating system (displayed as “Power Score”) to rank characters. The system is inspired by chess ratings:

  • Every character starts at 1200 Power Score
  • Beating a higher-rated character earns more points
  • Losing to a lower-rated character costs more points
  • The K-factor decays as matchups get more votes, making established rankings more stable

This means a character who consistently beats strong opponents will rise faster than one who only beats weaker ones. The system naturally finds the community consensus over time.

FAQ

How are matchups decided?+
Every active character is paired against every other active character. This creates thousands of unique matchups for the community to vote on.
What is a Power Score?+
Power Score is our ELO-based rating system. Every character starts at 1200. Winning against higher-rated characters earns more points, while losing to lower-rated characters costs more. It measures overall community sentiment about a character's strength.
Can I vote more than once?+
You can vote on as many different matchups as you want, but each matchup can only receive one vote per person per day. This prevents spam while letting you weigh in across the board.
How is "Most Controversial" calculated?+
Controversy score measures how evenly split the votes are. A 50/50 split is maximum controversy. It only counts matchups with at least 5 votes to filter out noise.
Where does the character data come from?+
Character profiles, images, and anime information are sourced from the Jikan API (MyAnimeList). We also enrich character details like abilities, height, and age from multiple anime databases.
Can I suggest a new character or matchup?+
Yes! Use the Suggest a Battle page to submit matchup ideas. We regularly review suggestions and add new characters to the roster.
Is VersusAnime affiliated with any anime studio?+
No. VersusAnime is a fan-made project. All character images and anime titles belong to their respective owners and creators.
