Most Powerful Anime Abilities of All Time - Top 10
From Gojo's Infinity to the Death Note - we ranked the 10 most broken abilities in anime by how unfair they are in a fight.
Ranking by "How Unfair Is This?"
Raw power is one thing. But some anime abilities are so conceptually broken that they bypass power levels entirely. A street-level character with the right hax can beat a planet-buster.
We ranked these abilities by a single question: how hard is this to counter in a fight?
10. Kamui - Obito Uchiha (Naruto)
What it does: Makes Obito's body intangible. Attacks pass through him harmlessly. He can also teleport himself or others to a pocket dimension.
Why it's broken: You literally cannot hit him. For 5 minutes of activation, Obito is unhittable by any physical or energy-based attack. The only counter is another space-time technique or attacking during his brief tangible moments.
Counter difficulty: Medium. Kakashi's matching Kamui, Minato's speed, and coordinated attacks exploited the 5-minute limit. But without knowledge of the weakness, this ability is unbeatable.
9. Bungee Gum - Hisoka (Hunter x Hunter)
Just kidding. But seriously:
9. Baryon Mode - Naruto Uzumaki (Boruto)
What it does: Fuses Naruto and Kurama's chakra like nuclear fusion. Every physical contact drains the opponent's life force - not their chakra, their actual lifespan.
Why it's broken: It doesn't matter how durable you are. Every hit literally shortens your remaining time alive. Isshiki Otsutsuki - the strongest villain in Boruto - was reduced from days of remaining life to minutes.
Counter difficulty: High. You'd need to avoid all contact and outlast the timer, since Baryon Mode burns Kurama's life force too. But while active, it's nearly impossible to survive sustained contact.
8. Malevolent Shrine - Sukuna (Jujutsu Kaisen)
What it does: Sukuna's Domain Expansion manifests a 200-meter Buddhist shrine in reality (no barrier needed) that continuously slashes everything inside with Cleave and Dismantle.
Why it's broken: Guaranteed-hit slashing that adapts to the target's durability. Unlike other domains, it has no barrier - meaning it can compete with enclosed domains by attacking the barrier from outside.
Counter difficulty: Very high. You need your own domain to counter it, or the ability to exist outside the 200-meter range. Inside the shrine, you're being sliced continuously.
7. Hakai - Beerus / Goku (Dragon Ball Super)
What it does: Erases anything from existence - matter, energy, souls, ghosts. Beerus used it to erase a ghost that shouldn't have had a physical form to destroy. Goku learned a weaker version.
Why it's broken: It's not damage - it's erasure. No durability protects against being removed from existence. Even immortal beings fear Hakai.
Counter difficulty: Extreme. Only beings of comparable divine power have resisted it. In the mortal realm, it's effectively an instant-kill.
6. The Almighty - Yhwach (Bleach)
What it does: Yhwach sees all possible futures simultaneously and can alter any future where he loses (TYBW arc).
Why it's broken: Imagine fighting someone who already knows every move you'll make and can change the outcome of any attack. Any Bankai used against him? He's already seen it in a future timeline and created a counter. He broke Ichigo's Bankai before the fight even started.
Counter difficulty: Near-impossible. It took Aizen's Kyoka Suigetsu (to disrupt his future sight) + a Still Silver arrow (his one material weakness) + a final Getsuga Tensho to stop him. Three specific, unrepeatable conditions.
5. Gold Experience Requiem - Giorno Giovanna (JoJo Part 5)
What it does: Resets any action or willpower directed against Giorno to zero. If you attack him, the attack never happened. If you try to kill him, the attempt is nullified before it occurs.
Why it's broken: It's not reactive - it's preemptive. The ability activates before the attack reaches Giorno. Diavolo, who could erase time itself, was caught in an infinite death loop because even his time manipulation was reset to zero.
Counter difficulty: Theoretically impossible. No character in JoJo's has found a counter. The only debate is whether characters from higher-power universes could overwhelm it with sheer force - and there's no canon answer.
4. Kyoka Suigetsu - Aizen (Bleach)
What it does: Complete hypnosis over all five senses. Anyone who has seen Kyoka Suigetsu's release is permanently under Aizen's control - they see, hear, feel, smell, and taste whatever Aizen wants.
Why it's broken: It's not genjutsu that can be broken with chakra. It's a permanent, automatic sensory manipulation. You could be fighting a rock while Aizen stands behind you. Aizen used this to manipulate the entire Gotei 13 - hundreds of powerful fighters - simultaneously.
Counter difficulty: Almost impossible. Only someone who never saw the release (like Ichigo) or someone with comparable sensory manipulation (like Yhwach's Almighty, briefly) can counter it. There is no known method to break the hypnosis once established.
3. Unlimited Void - Gojo Satoru (JJK)
What it does: Gojo's Domain Expansion floods the target's mind with infinite information - every possible stimulus, sensation, and thought simultaneously. The target is alive but completely paralyzed, unable to process anything.
Why it's broken: Inside Unlimited Void, Gojo's attacks are guaranteed to hit while the opponent can't move, think, or react. Even 0.2 seconds of exposure caused lasting brain damage to Sukuna's vessel. The only characters who've survived extended exposure are those with exceptional cursed technique resistance.
Counter difficulty: You need your own domain expansion to counter it (domain clash), or a binding vow/Simple Domain to create a small safe zone. Without these specific counters, it's an instant win.
2. Infinity - Gojo Satoru (JJK)
What it does: Creates an infinite amount of space between Gojo and any incoming attack. Mathematically, nothing can reach him because the space keeps subdividing - like Zeno's paradox made real.
Why it's broken: It's always on. Gojo doesn't need to activate it. Bullets, punches, energy blasts - nothing reaches him. It's not a shield that can break; it's a mathematical concept that prevents contact.
Counter difficulty: Only one known method - Sukuna used Mahoraga's adaptive evolution to create a slash that cuts the concept of space itself. Without this extremely specific counter, Infinity is unbreakable.
Fun fact: Infinity + Unlimited Void on one character is why Gojo was considered the strongest in JJK. It took the King of Curses with a borrowed adaptive shikigami to finally bypass it.
1. Death Note - Light Yagami (Death Note)
What it does: Write someone's name while picturing their face. They die. No physical contact, no energy, no combat ability required. Works across any distance. The victim can be killed within 40 seconds or the method and time of death can be specified.
Why it's #1: It completely bypasses the power scaling system. It doesn't matter if you're planet-level, universal, or multiversal - if Light knows your name and face, you die. No durability feat protects against it. No speed advantage prevents it (Light writes the name from a different location). No hax ability counters it (the Death Note isn't chakra, cursed energy, or ki-based - it's a divine artifact from the Shinigami realm).
The only debates:
- Does it work on non-human entities? (Unknown - Shinigami can kill each other with it, but alien fighters from DBZ are uncharted territory)
- Does the target need to be a "mortal"? (Gods of Destruction, Otsutsuki, and other divine beings may be exempt)
- Can you dodge it by not having your real name known? (Many anime characters use aliases)
Even with these caveats, the Death Note is the most conceptually overpowered ability in anime because it makes the power level of both combatants irrelevant.
